Information Surprises

The unrestricted access to news information, brought me some surprises.  The first of them is that the digital Granma* is a light version of the printed one, and when I entered the site for Granma Internacional, it was as if they were talking about another country.

The second surprise was that the Palestinians also kill Israelis–I had only read in the press of my country about the massacres the Jews carry out against the Arabs–in the same way that I had discovered that the governments of Libya and Syria murder and repress their citizens.

I also was surprised with the assessment that the 15-M protests in Spain could have ended with a bombing of NATO, because the truth is that all that was more calm and organized within its spontaneous nature, although my family was very worried about me being in an unstable country and in a violent situation, according to what the national media was reporting.

But what surprised me most was knowing the life in one of the most happy countries in the world after China and North Korea!, a statistic elaborated by… North Korea, in which the United States is in last place.  If I had not seen it in El País, I would have thought that it was about a joke from Granma.

Wow. Cuban journalism really is a joke. The truth is that Israel bends over backward to NOT kill Palestinians as best they can, while Hezbollah and Hamas put their rocket launchers in highly populated Palestinian areas and shoot rockets across the border to Israeli neighborhoods. That way, the Israelis either have to try to take out the rocket launchers in self defense while risking killing a large number of Palestinian civilians, or they have to let their own people’s homes be destroyed.

Whatever the Israelis do in that situation, the terrorists win. If the Jews fight back and wipe out the rocket launchers, they can be smeared as the killers of innocents (although at least some of those “innocents” are willing “human shields”). If the Israelis don’t take out the launchers, the terrorists succeed in killing Israelis and destroying Israeli homes. And they can just keep doing that until they win. Should Israelis let that happen? Who is actually morally to blame if the “human shields” get maimed or killed and their homes get destroyed?

Israel is the most democratic, rights-respecting country in the Middle East. The fanatical Islamists represented by Hamas and Hezbollah want to impose theocratic tyranny on the region, and do not recognize Israel’s right to exist. They want no non-Islamic, democratic countries in their midst. For many years they have explicitly stated that they intend to destroy Israel. And the leftists around the world seem happy to take their part and defame the freest country in the region.
